Language Intent:

Learning a foreign language provides an opening in to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Implementation: Our chosen language at Haslemere is French - We have a specialist teacher for French from Years 3 to 6.  Children in Year 6 also learn Spanish during the summer term to give them exposure of another language ready for Senior school.

Impact: Each week, the children’s work will be evidenced through samples of work/worksheets, pictures, pupil voice and teacher feedback. This will help us to inform what we need to reteach and improve for future lessons.

At Haslemere Primary School, it is our aim to provide engaging and high-quality language lessons, which offer a valuable education, social and cultural experience for all pupils. We believe that the study of a foreign language helps children to develop communication skills and extends their knowledge of how language works, including their own.   Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand better their own cultures and those of others.  The teaching of a new language creates a level playing field upon which children of all abilities and backgrounds can achieve and increase in confidence.

Specialist teacher delivers a carefully planned scheme of work spanning year 3-6, aiming to develop the key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in the target language and using a variety of media. Most importantly, language-learning skills, which are transferable to future language studies, are embedded in the lessons. Children are encouraged to share and use their own language experiences and background to deepen their learning. We offer opportunities to put our language skills to “real life” use during our trip to la Patisserie in Southfields. We aim to provide children with sound language skills and keen enthusiasm for engaging with wider world as they set off into secondary education.
